ago 和before都是“以前”的意思。但它们表示的侧重点不同。
ago 表示“从现在起若干时间以前”，常与动词一般过去式连用。而且ago只能作副词。例如：
He left Shanghai some time ago. 他前些日子离开了上海。
Her father died two years ago. 她父亲两年前去世了。
before 表示“从过去某时起若干时间以前”，常与过去完成式连用。而before既可作副词又可作介词和连词。例如：
When he got to the station , the train had left a few minutes before.
当他赶到火车站时，火车已经在几分钟前开走了。
I had finished the work two days before. 两天前我已完成了工作。（副词）
Please close the window before you leave. 离开前请关好窗户。（连词）
the day before yesterday 前天（介词）
two days before Christmas 圣诞节两天前（介词）
I visited him two days ago , but he had gone to Paris five days before.
我于两天前去访问他，可是他已于那5天前赴巴黎去了。（副词）
